"When I was 11 years old, I found a book called 'Mein Fliegerleben' in the attic of my parents' house. It is the story of a German WWI pilot who after the war, flew around the world, met pilots from England, France, USA and became friends with them.
As a boy, I was fascinated by flying and the fragile construction of these airplanes. Later, I learned the truth about the book and its background. It was printed in 1936 as a piece of propaganda. Now, almost 50 years later, I found the book again at an antique bookstore and got immersed into the images once more.
My woodblocks and sculptures are based on the images that I still remember. It has made quite an impression on me how innocent and enthusiastic my feelings were about this topic to the point of leading me to follow German history and dig deeper."
